Original score for the premiere production of Francis Gallop’s Cosmonaut for the Edinburgh International Science Festival, directed by Kate Nelson.
With the sound world of the narrative incorporating radio bunkers, white noise, bleeping satellites and communications from space, there was a sonic landscape entirely suited to an electronic score.
The score was realised in the rehearsal process, sculpting sounds with analogue synthesizers and digital effects, penning musical phrases in response to the performances in the space.
Every sound was created using this process whether it was a pitched musical voice or a sound effect such as radio interference. As the story blurred the edges of scientific fact and folklore, this proved a suitable way for the soundtrack to parallel with the narrative and offered a coherency to the soundtrack.
